Rhetorical Risks
Tess Holiday on the cover of Cosmopolitan magazine generated a fair bit of controversy online and even in mainstream news. The magazine is trying to promote body positivity and that idea that all body types are beautiful. People countered with the argument that promoting that kind of body type as being desierable would be harmful to people because of the fact that being morbidly obeese is horrible for your body. I imagine that Cosmopolitan knew what it was doing with this cover and expected it to generate controversy and revenue. Thoes risks seemed to have payed off, as the cover generated lots of discourse online and from people in the news cycle. While the magazine is based in the UK, the controversy still made its way into the U.S.A with people talking about it on Twitter. The article generated a ton of publicity and revenue for Cosmopolitan. Its safe to say that this article acheived what the editors set out to do in creating one of the most controversial covers of the decade.
I agree that Cosmopolitan did this image on purpose in order to get controversy and people talking about the magazine. They did a good job to get publicity. Also, you misspelled magazine (you spelled it magaine).
ReplyDeleteMagazine is no longer misspelled. Thank you for taking care of this critical mistake.
DeleteExcellent example of a rhetorical risk. Images of plus-sized models are the subject of much controversy in the media, especially as of late.
